The Gem Identification Lab Class offered by the Gemological Institute of America® (GIA) provides hands-on training to GIA students on techniques used to identify natural and laboratory-grown gemstones, imitations, and assembled gemstones.

Students will practice these skills using a variety of equipment including a microscope, a refractometer with polarizing filter and a removable magnifying eyepiece, refractive index (RI) liquid, a polariscope with an optic figure sphere, a dichroscope, a table model prism spectroscope, a handheld spectroscope and a loupe.

The class is taught in the Museum’s fully equipped gemology lab classroom by a gemology instructor from GIA’s World Headquarters in Carlsbad, California.

The GIA Gem Identification Lab Class is offered through GIA Online Education and is a requirement to earn the GIA Graduate Gemologist® or GIA Graduate Colored Online Diplomas. However, an intention to earn a GIA credential is not required to apply for this class. Learn More about this lab class.

How to Attend this Lab Class:

Lab class students must complete an admissions application through GIA’s website and be accepted at least one week prior to the start of the lab class.

Lab Class Duration:  October 14-18

Class Times: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Location: Gemology lab class at the Alfie-Norville Gem and Mineral Museum

Cost: $2,043.08 (includes Tuition, books, materials and tax)
